VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any Mac with a 64-bit Intel processor or an Apple Silicon chip. Previous devices are supported by older releases. Note that the first generation of Intel-based Macs equipped with Core Solo or Core Duo processors is no longer supported. If you dislike VLC for its unusual user interface that lacks some Mac-specific native options, you should give the free IINA app, pictured above, a try. IINA is a modern macOS media player that not only adopts Apple’s clean post-Yosemite design language, but also the company’s underlying platform technologies such as Force Touch, Touch Bar and Picture-in-Picture. Step 1: Download and install the latest version of VLC for Mac from the official site. Step 2: Choose the video output directory (where the trimmed video will go to). Launch VLC media player from the Launchpad or application on your Mac. Navigate to the Preferences window which is accessible from the VLC menu at the top bar.

Unfortunately, VLC is not yet offered with a universal binary, which means that the app now has two different versions: one for Intel Macs and one for M1 Macs. Once you update the VLC app for macOS to version 3.0.12, you must check for updates again and install version 3.0.12.1 — which is compiled for ARM machines.
VLC is available for free and you can get it through the official VideoLAN website. The mobile version of VLC for iOS is available for free on the App Store.
